Only scanty flint-tools found in sands testify that the first people settled in the territory of the present-day Lithuania in the 10th millennium BC. Then the ethnic units today known as the Balts developed.
Several millenniums had passed before Publius Cornelius Tacitus, the historian of the Roman Empire, made mention of the Aestii in 98 AD. According to Tacitus, they lived on the eastern coastline of the Baltic Sea and gathered amber to trade with the Roman Empire.
In later times, the territory was constantly struck by various raids. In 853 AD, the martial ancestors of Scandinavians attacked the Apuolė, one of the strongest wooden castles at that time, but were unsuccessful in defeating the Curonians, a Baltic tribe.
The raids by the Vikings on the eastern coastline of the Baltic Sea did not limit to that one. The territory of the present-day Lithuania became the object of international interest, thus the mention of the name of Lithuania in the Annales Quedlinburgenses in 1009 is not accidental. From that time, Lithuania became a part of the European history.
